Deerstalker, 18-year-old Single Malt (Scotland)
The Deerstalker Scotch whisky brand name has a long and honourable heritage, stretching back to the 1880s, when it was established by the Leith wine and spirit merchant J G Thomson & Co.
Originally a blend, Deerstalker has been marketed as a single malt since 1991, and is now in the hands of the Glasgow-based company Aberko.
This18-year-old is the most recent addition to the range. The18-year-olds come from Inver House's Balmenach distillery, near Grantown-on-Spey.
The 18-year-old expression of Deerstalker possesses an intriguing and inviting nose, with obvious herbal notes, plus eucalyptus, heather and hints of well-mannered Sherry. Rich and warming on the palate, this is a big-bodied beast, with well harmonised malt and Sherry flavours prevailing. A suggestion of peat smoke lingers in the background, and the finish is long and sophisticated.
This is a first class Speyside dram.
