DAILUAINE 22 YEAR OLD SPEYSIDE MALT. DIDTILLED 1973.
A VERY RARE SOUGHT AFTER BOTTLE FOR THE COLLECTOR.
Dailuaine 22 Year OldExclusive Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distilled: 1973.60.92%Vol.
On the nose this whisky is quite delicate showing aromas of grapefruit peel, lavender, fresh cut grass, and a slight hint of sea spray. On the palate it is remarkably fresh, especially for a twenty two year old whisky, and shows flavors of melon, citrus, some leather, and lemongrass with a subtle salinity and light notes of red fruit. It finishes long, with notes of leather, cigar box, and a hint of anise integrated with more bright and vibrant citrus. A very refreshing whisky indeed!
This is a bit of a rarity from the Speyside; a single malt bottling from the Dailuaine (pronounced dal-YOU-ayn) distillery. We say relative since most, if not all of you out there, have had their whiskey at one time or another, as it is a major constituent of the Johnnie Walker blends. However, only around 2% of their entire output makes it into single malt bottlings. It is quite the pity, being that this distillery produces some distinctive whisky that without a doubt stands on its own legs.
The distillery is located in the village of Carron, wedged in a lush glen between the river Spey and the mountain Ben Rinnes; a fitting location given that the Gaelic translation of Dailuaine is "green valley". Besides being aptly named, it is also an ideal location for a distillery in spite of its remoteness, having access to sound water from the nearby Bailliemullich Burn and a nearby stop on the Strathspey line of the Great North of Scotland Railway. The distillery actually had it's own station and locomotive; quite useful for bringing in barley and shipping out whisky (since all barrel aging was done offsite). The locomotive is now restored and is currently displayed at the Aberfeldy distillery. The rail line is now defunct, but it has since been converted to a hiking trail that runs from Tomintoul to the North Sea.
